Episode 28! Our 3rd Indiegogo Perk Partner, Ian Kiser, joined us for this week’s podcast. I apologize up front that we munched on port wine cheese and drank Not Your Father’s root beer during this podcast, and so we were a little off KILT-er this episode. And Ian was wearing a kilt. So there.

Ian Kiser attended his first con this year at ConCarolinas. We immediately liked him because he wore a kilt. Then he hung out with us while we podcasted. Then he told us he owns 9 kilts. And then he showed up to the New Geek Gala HQ with many bottles of Not Your Father’s Root Beer. And of course, he supported our Geek Gala Indiegogo. So basically, we think he’s awesome. No matter what he and his father and brother were sitting on back when they were doing podcasts.

Episode 27! Candice Carpenter from We Geek Girls and our 2nd Indiegogo Perk Partner, Patrick Owen Barnhardt. And Carol the Cat and Tenacious Tiffles Tinsley Tennenbaum (or whatever she is calling herself this week) were back to join us in a fun week of discussing Congregate, Antman, SDCC trailers and updates and more.

Candice Carpenter (CC) is a proud product of what she considers to be a very cool decade (the 80’s). She credits her two brothers for helping to make her the well-rounded geek girl she is. Her geekdom took a huge leap when she began to read more. Enter Tolkien, Lewis, King, Lackey, Wies/Hickman, and the list goes on. Patrick Owen Barnhardt is not a stripper, nor does he play one on television. But there was this one time at a Geek Meet where he almost did. Supposedly. He’s also the founder, CEO and go-to guy of Helical Games, an independent game development team working on several cool projects. Rumor has it that he also has a day job, but since he won’t tell us where it is, we are still going with our gut on this one. No matter what, he brought the podcast team pizza and soda, and he supported our Indiegogo, so he’s a hero in our book.

Episode 26: Herc’s Doing Something Clever(Con)

Episode 26 found Starneslord and Giddygeeker alone at Geek Gala HQ to run the heavy metal podcast (We fear that Carol the Cat got hung up by ‘The Gallows.’ As for Tiffles, well, she must have found a Gossip Girl/Gilmore Girls/Henry Cavill marathon somewhere.) No matter! We were delighted to host Adam Nelson and Kelly Flusk as they officially announced CleverCon on August 15th. Joining us was also Eraklis Petmezas (aka MadTiki aka Herc) – a wonderful artist and leader of Sketch Charlotte.

Something Clever originated in 2011 as primarily a cover act, however over the years as the lineup changed, the band shifted focus, with a prevalent element of fist-clenching, ‘go-for-it’ active rock and metal throughout their originally penned songs. Armed with their current lineup of Adam Nelson on vocals, lead guitarist and founding member Kelly Flusk, rhythm guitarist/backing vocalist Brett Baker, bassist/backing vocalist Colt Crevar, and drummer Dylan Roles, they’ve honed a new edge to their music, and are leaning into it.

Something Clever was also commissioned to create music for Charlotte channel WSOC TV’s high school football segment for television broadcast, running the last two football seasons straight. Some very positive response has skyrocketed the band to the number 1 spot on Reverb Nation for metal acts from Charlotte.The band’s current EP release, ‘Season of Darkness’, is part of a double-EP endeavor, which began global distribution on March 17th, 2015. The second EP, ‘Season of Light’, is set for a late-2015, early 2016 launch.

Eraklis Petmezas (Herc) graduated from the Savannah College of Art & Design witha BFA in Illustration. In the years to follow he created art for numerous musical acts and quite a number of editorial illustrations, storyboards, window displays and many pages of comic art. He’s had work published by Image comics, Arcana, and Asylum Press. His first love will always be telling stories. He is working on new comics as you read this. In 2006 he started Sketch Charlotte, a weekly meeting of artists, musicians, designers and writers in the Charlotte area. That same year he joined 803 Studios; an art collective out of South Carolina. When he’s not drawing he conducts a Comics Camp for the Imaginon Library. He will gladly accept money in exchange for art, if you are willing to part with some.

Episode 25: Call Chuck Carte!

Chuck Carte joined us for episode 25. You may know him as part of the Carolina Ghostbusters, or as part of the Sci-Fried Eggs Podcast, or perhaps as Stanly Academy’s Teacher of the Year for the 2nd year in a row. We just called him fun to have around!

Chuck is a writer, director, comedian, and cosplayer local to the Charlotte area. Chuck is also a prop builder and costume maker. His cosplays include Ghostbusters, Doctor Who, Bilbo Baggins, The Blues Brothers, and many more.

In 2007 he received a degree in English from the University of NOrth Carolina at Charlotte where he learned, among many other skills, screenwriting and writing for the stage. Over the years he has directed plays for community and education based theaters, written and directed short films, and taught English across many disciplines including theatre and creative writing. He most recently served as showrunner and contributing writer for the sketch comedy show Laugh Tracks.

On the road again! Starneslord and Giddygeeker were the Away Team for this mission (neither of us packed any red shirts on purpose – phew!) and headed down to Storm-Con in historic Charleston, South Carolina. For this podcast we were joined by comic artist Christine Brunson and the organizers for Atomacon, Janet Iannantuono and her daughter Michelle Iannantuono.

Christine Brunson is a freelance comic writer and colorist as well as co-creator of Undead Norm. When she is not working on her comic projects, she spends a lot of time chasing after her son and her husband while talking like a Dalek.

Janet Iannantuono is the founder and Convention Chair for AtomaCon. ATOMACON is Charleston, South Carolina’s First Sci-Fi, Fantasy,Gaming, Science and Technology Convention. This year it will be held November 13-15, 2015.

On the road again! Starneslord and Giddygeeker were the Away Team for this mission (neither of us packed any red shirts on purpose – phew!) and headed down to Storm-Con in historic Charleston, South Carolina. For this podcast we were joined by game designer Coleman Richards, and Storm-Con organizers Barry Lewis and Keith Mageau.

Coleman Richards is a recent high school graduate who is ready to launch his first game design, Galactic Domination. Although currently not ready for distribution, Coleman set up demonstrations of the game at Storm-Con and had a great response from the crowd!

Coleman is currently working on setting up an online presence for Galactic Domination – check back soon for an update!

Barry Lewis is one of the directors of Storm-Con. Storm-Con is a gaming convention held in Charleston, SC and this year was their third year. Along with tabletop and boardgames, there was also tournament and organized playing, RPGs and even historical wargames along with a cool programming track.
